CL and PPL Images from the Colorado School of Mines

CL and PPL image of sillimanite-corundum schist from the Whitehorn Stock metamorphic aureole in central Colorado. CL image exhibits corundum (var. sapphire) porphyroblasts with nucleating fibrolite (maroon) at the grain boundaries, invading the surrounding matrix. CL image also depicts replacement of primary K-feldspar (dark blue) by secondary plagioclase (light blue). Image by William Aertker, Dept. of Geology and Geological Engineering, Colorado School of Mines taken in the LSU Optical Petrology Imaging (OPi) Lab on a Relion System.
